Undoer | Unreal and Blender | 2024 AAU Spring Show Winner
This level was created in under 72 hours for the Academy of Art 2024 Spring Show, where it won first place in the Level Design category.
I knew I wanted to start a new project for the spring show rather than sumbit something I had already been working on. My other levels I had done for the school had been set in the present or future, so I wanted to take a medieval approach to this. I studied the layouts of vaious European towns and applied what I saw to this. Multiple pathways and a sense of verticallity were important to replicate. I wanted part of the town to be surrounded by cliffs, so I used that opprotunity to create some natural arches like you'd see in the Adriatic sea.
I created the base mesh of structures in Unreal then ported them over to Blender where I reinforced the detail. I wanted the player to have a vantage point in various parts of the town, so I created multiple towers with raised paths linking them. I think it validates the fantasy setting and looks rather ominous. I added windmills to the cliffs in order to make some background elements that made the world feel more alive. The town is in the middle of a celebration of sorts too, with the main street packed with stalls and banners, multiple people gathered around with the pub being at capacity.
Winning the category at the spring show was a suprise to me due to the time crunch I had spent on this. The other goal I had in designing this level was to see if I could tackle the fantasy/medieval setting that I wasn't as familiar with.
