Horrible Orbital | Unreal (Previously Unity) | Action Platformer
Horrible Orbital started out as a 2D platformer in Unity. I based a lot of the aesthetic on NASA during the 60's and 70's. In the original, my goal was to implement multiple systems that worked together in order to make interesting puzzles. There was basic movement, but the player was also equipped with a grapple hook and a physics manipulation gun. There's also zero gravity zones and laser hazards throughout the levels. One of my favorite puzzles I designed was where a player needed to place a box with the physics manipulator in a zero gravity zone, then grapple onto the box and pull themselves towards it, gaining momentum as they flew between two laser hazards.
I put the project away for a bit but it stuck in the back of my head. I played a few 3D platformers which sparked an interest in making one myself. I thought of the mechanics in Horrible Orbital and thought those would be fun to use in 3D, and so began the task of adding another dimension onto Horrible Orbital.
